Things to help aid Hemiplegia or Hemiparesis

Occupational Therapy: Occupational Therapists will help children with daily living tasks, strengthen muscles in hand and arm, help work on upper part of body

Physical Therapy: Physical Therapists use exercises and other special treatments to help people move their bodies.  They help children learn to move their bodies, so they can play, feed themselves, walk and run. PT's work on the whole body, legs and hips.

Speech Therapy: Speech-language pathologists treat problems in the areas of articulation; dysfluency; oral-motor, speech, and voice; and receptive and expressive language disorders.

Kinesio Taping:  Kinesio tape has an elastic quality that differs from athletic tape. It allows free movement without restriction while providing support and reducing muscle fatigue. It is helpful in reducing pain and edema through the stretching of muscles.

Four Major Functions of Kinesio Tape:

  • Relieves pain
  • Corrects muscle function through reduction of muscle tension and strengthening of the weakened muscle
  • Improves circulation and lymphatic flow while reducing inflammation
  • Corrects misalignment of joints

Electrical StimulationElectrical Stimulation uses an electrical current to let a muscle or a group of muscles contract.  Electrical stimulation helps strengthen the affected muscles. When placing electrodes on the skin physical therapists can recruit the appropriate muscle fibers.  The PT can use different settings from gentle to firm.

*Cameron does do Electrical Stimulation with Dr. consent.  Many believe Electrical Stimulation might cause or see more seizures after being controlled with medication. As of now Cameron has had a gentle current and no seizures at this time.  Always check with your Dr. before starting any new procedure.)

Hippotherapy: Is therapy with the help of a horse.  Use of a horse's movement for rehabilitation.  Hippotherapy helps with improved balance, posture, mobility, communication and behavior. There are differences between Hippotherapy and Therapeutic Riding.
